Ang Mo Kio was once an area covered in secondary forest and rubber plantations. It’s since been transformed into one of Singapore’s most densely-packed heartlands, housing more than 140,000 HDB residents, Ang Mo Kio boasts roughly 50,733 flats under their management!
A Walk Through The History Of Ang Mo Kio
The name Ang Mo Kio in Hokkien translates to the ‘red-haired man’s bridge’, referring to a bridge built by Government Surveyor Johnson Turnball Thomson between 1841 and 1853.
Originally uninhabited, the town saw its first settlers during the early 20th-century rubber boom.
With farms and attap houses nestled among rubber estates, Ang Mo Kio’s early landscape was vastly different from today’s urban sprawl.
Developed way back in the 1970s, Ang Mo Kio was Singapore’s seventh new town. It also quickly became the pilot site for the town council concept in 1986.
Today, it offers a vibrant environment for living, working, playing, and learning.
New projects, like the 2016 Ang Mo Kio Court, featuring elderly-friendly Three-Generation (3G) flats, blend seamlessly with older structures.
Furthermore, Ang Mo Kio is being reimagined as Singapore’s first walking and cycling town, supporting the vision of a car-lite society.
