Don’t be fooled by this pair of retro-styled cans. Where quality meets style, the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless continues to compete with the best in the Bluetooth Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) headphone category, even after being on the market for a couple of years. Although lacking in the latest features such as touch controls and smart features, the Momentum 2.0 ooze premium quality and sound while providing an amazing listening experience on-the-go.

High-quality sound
Premium build quality
× Sensitive Noise Cancelling

Sennheiser has long been regarded as one of the best when it comes to sound and the Momentum 2.0 is no exception. It boasts a warm and smooth sound signature that is richly-detailed and clear. The bass goes deep without being too overwhelming and its soundstage is pretty large, considering its closed-back design.

With the aptX codec, music of up to 352 kbps can be streamed over the Bluetooth 4.0 connection. This is more than sufficient for Spotify premium users with 320 kbps of music streaming. For even higher quality audio, users have the option of switching to the wired mode with ANC turned on.
The noise cancelling may not be the best in the market right now. However, we found that the Momentum’s noise cancelling sits in the Goldilocks zone; enough to filter out ambient noise while not adding too much pressure in the ears. One minor annoyance we found is that the Momentum 2.0 with ANC turned on are sensitive to bumps when sitting at the back of a bus or driving a car over bumpy roads.

Design and Build

The Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless not only sounds good but looks good. The headband is covered in leather and is finished with beautiful seams. The brushed look of the stainless-steel sliders combined with the black or ivory earcups adds to the premium look of the Momentums.
The Momentum 2.0 is undoubtedly a pair of premium quality headphones as well, featuring a stainless-steel frame and (replaceable) authentic leather earpads. With the cords well-protected behind the steel frame and minimal plastic used in the build, one can be sure that these pair of headphones are built to last. The Momentum 2.0 also features large earcups and a collapsible design for portability, which is a direct upgrade from the Momentum 1.0.

With its soft, memory foam leather earpads, the Momentum 2.0 does feel very comfortable. Initially, the clamping force of the headphones did feel a little too much. Thankfully, the Momentum 2.0 becomes more comfortable over time as it stretches out to fit your head. Some user reviews have pointed out that the padding on the headband is insufficient and causes a slight irritation at the crown of the head. We did feel this irritation as well and wished Sennheiser had put a little more padding into the headbands. Be that as it may, with some adjustments, we managed to find the sweet spot where the headband did not put too much pressure at the crown. After a week or so with the Momentum 2.0, it was comfortable enough for an 8-hour listening session with barely any fatigue.

Notable Features

Although it lacks smart features and touch controls, the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless still has plenty of neat features that keep it competitive in the market today. One of these features is the ability to connect to two devices simultaneously, providing a seamless experience when switching devices. You no longer have to unpair from your computer and then pair the headphones again to your smartphone when you want to leave the house for example.

Not having touch controls turned out to be a good thing for the Momentum 2.0. Many of the headphones which feature touch controls were not as responsive or reliable. The physical buttons on the Momentum 2.0 provided an intuitive and reliable way of controlling your music, without having to worry about accidentally pausing tracks because of a slight mistouch.
Another neat little feature is being able to listen to music while it is charging via the USB cable. This lets you watch a movie on your computer with the ANC turned on without worrying about the battery as opposed to just using the passive wired mode. Many other headphones lack this feature and we are glad that Sennheiser incorporated this into the Momentum 2.0.

The Momentum 2.0 comes with an in-flight adapter, USB charging cable and a 3.5mm cable with an L-shaped jack plug. We really loved the locking mechanism on the Momentum 2.0 which prevents the cable from being accidentally yanked out from the headphone jack.

The most exciting accessory for us has to be the travel case and the soft pouch. Both look and feel premium while providing double layered protection if you pack your Momentum 2.0 into the soft pouch and zip it in the travel case.

Other details:
• 22 hours of battery life
• NFC enabled pairing

On release, the Sennheiser was priced at $799. Now, you can pick a pair up at XGear for $499 with a free headphone stand (worth $45), Stereo for $499 (membership price), or the official Sennheiser online store for $499 as well.

The Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 is a great choice for a premium quality, travel headphones that also look incredibly stylish. Excelling at all the significant areas of sound, build quality, and comfort, we do highly recommend the Momentum 2.0 even in 2018.
