Ready to dive into one of the most electrifying sports on the planet?
Let’s jump right in!
Is Handball Just About Ball Throwing, Or Is There More To It?
Handball is played on a 40m long and 20m wide court with 2m high and 3m wide nets at either end.
A game consists of two 30-minute periods with a 10/15-minute rest in between.
The longer sides of the Handball court are called sidelines, while the shorter sides are known as goal lines or outer goal lines.
All players alternate between an attacking position and a defending position, depending on who has possession of the ball.
In handball, the ball is usually moved around the court by passing and dribbling; however, as in basketball, you cannot double-dribble.🤾
Players can hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds before having to pass or dribble and can take up to three steps while holding the ball.
Goals are scored by throwing the ball into 2m by 3m nets.
The Guardian Angel Of The Team In Handball: Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper stands in a 6 metre goal area that court players are not allowed to be in, however, they may leap into this area whilst shooting provided they shoot before they land.
But the goalkeeper is no mere spectator behind the posts; they are the ultimate guardian, the last line of defence who can single-handedly determine the fate of a game.💂
Their main job is to SACRIFICE their entire body to prevent the ball from entering the goal.
They are also able to dictate the flow and speed of attacks, as they can initiate fast breaks with just a quick throw.
Goalkeepers can even leave their goal area when not in possession of the ball and participate as a court player, adding a tactical twist to the game.
Throwing A Ball From Ancient Times to Modern-Day Handball
Handball’s origins can be traced back to ancient times, with similar games played by various civilisations.
Evidence suggests that forms of handball-like games were enjoyed by the Greeks, Romans, and even the Mayans, who played games involving a ball and hands.
However, the modern version of handball began to take shape in 19th-century Europe.
Denmark, Germany, and Sweden developed distinct versions of the game, each emphasising fast-paced movement and teamwork.
In 1898, Danish schoolteacher Holger Nielsen formalized the rules for a handball-like game known as “håndbold.”
Around the same time, Germany developed “Torball,” played outdoors on a larger field.
The first recorded handball match as we know it today, took place in 1906 in Denmark, with the sport quickly gaining popularity across Europe.
By 1936, handball made its Olympic debut in Berlin as an outdoor 11-player game.
Later, in 1972, the faster-paced 7-player indoor version of handball became an official Olympic sport.
Since then, handball has grown into a globally recognized sport, celebrated for its intensity, skill, and dynamic play.

The establishment of the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF) in 1928 marked the beginning of its formal international governance.
Post-World War II, the reformation of the International Handball Federation (IHF) in 1946 further propelled the sport’s global reach.
Handball’s inclusion in the Olympic Games, first as an outdoor sport in 1936 and later as an indoor event in 1972, helped to significantly boost its international profile.
Today, handball thrives worldwide, with countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas actively participating in international competitions, reflecting its evolution into a truly global sport.

Modern handball has evolved into a fast-paced, high-octane sport that keeps fans on the edge of their seats. 💨
Thanks to continuous innovation by the International Handball Federation (IHF), the game has become more dynamic, efficient, and attack-oriented than ever before.
Speed And Precision, The Bread And Butter Of Modern Handball
Modern handball has become one of the fastest team sports in the world, with the average time for an attack dropping to just 33.8 seconds and up to 120 attacks per game.
This relentless pace is matched by improved offensive efficiency, which has risen from 48.1% in 2011 to 58.6% in 2021, reflecting refined tactics and sharper execution at top tournaments.
Playing Handball Like Magnus Carlsen Play’s Chess
With innovative strategies like the Seven-versus-Six tactic and a notable reduction in turnovers, handball has become a faster and more strategically dynamic sport.
This strategy involves substituting the goalkeeper with an outfield player to gain a numerical advantage in attack. ♟️
It helps to create more space and opportunities to score, making it a powerful tool in high-pressure situations.
However, it comes with risks, as losing possession can leave the goal unguarded, leading to easy goals for the opposing team.
Modern handball teams have also significantly improved their ability to protect possession.
The average number of turnovers per game has decreased from 12.6 in 2009 to just 8.8 in 2021.
Essentially, this reflects smarter gameplay, better execution of tactics, and more varied strategies, allowing teams to maintain control and create higher-quality scoring opportunities.
Is It Okay To Keep Changing The Rules Of Handball…?🤔
Recent adjustments in rules, like the tweaking of throw-off rules, have accelerated the game’s tempo and increased scoring.
The IHF is set to introduce new rules and a dedicated app with video resources, aimed at enhancing accessibility and engagement for players, coaches, and fans alike.
Modern handball thrives on innovation and adaptability, making it one of the most exciting sports globally.
With its combination of speed, skill, and strategy, the game continues to evolve, offering promising times ahead for players and spectators alike.

What is resin?
Resin is a sticky, viscous substance that can be either naturally derived from plants or synthetically produced.
It is commonly used in various industries for adhesives, coatings, plastics, and even art.
However, in the world of handball, resin plays a crucial role in enhancing performance and making the game more thrilling to watch.
This sticky substance provides players with a better grip on the ball, allowing for more precise passes, powerful throws, and creative plays that keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Eww…Sticky Substance… How Do You Even Apply It?

To get the most out of resin, evenly spread a small amount over your fingertips before applying it to the ball.🤾
Turn the ball as you apply the resin to ensure it is evenly distributed, avoiding clumps that could leave marks on the court or affect your grip.
Popular brands like SELECT, Hummel, and Kempa offer high-quality resin approved by the European Handball Federation.
These resins are easy to apply, maintain a soft texture, and are widely used in professional leagues and championships.

Resin removal is just as important as its application.
Players can use baby oil, resin removers, or SELECT’s textile spray to clean their hands, balls, and even clothing.
Proper care ensures that resin doesn’t leave stains or damage equipment.
Not all handballs are suitable for resin use, but brands like SELECT Advance and Kempa Spectrum Synergy Plus are designed for optimal performance with resin.
These high-quality handballs provide excellent grip and durability, making them a favourite among players.
Even though resin may leave a mark on the court, its impact on the game is undeniable, giving handball its unique edge and excitement.
