Many of us drink at least one cup of coffee per day to help us power through the day. Our go-to coffees are usually the 3-in-1 instant coffees or kopis from kopitiams or one of the cafes. In this article, we will be sharing why you should start to make/brew your own home brewed coffee. And no, we are not talking about making a 3-in-1 coffee.

Cost is comparable or even lower?!

If you step into a coffee shop, an average cup of kopi-o cost about $1.00 to $1.20 today. 35 packs for an instant. The price for 15 packs of Nescafe Kopi O is now $3.80, which cost about $0.25 for one cup of coffee.

On average, a 200g of speciality beans will cost you $14. We use about 14g of beans for each cup of coffee, so one bag of beans usually lasts us about 14 brews. By doing the math, each home brewed coffee will cost $1.00. It is comparable or even cheaper than coffee shops’ coffee but cost about 4 cups of 3-in-1 coffee. Sure, monetarily wise it is cheaper, but there are definitely trade-offs depending on how you see it.

Note: We only accounted for the recurring costs in our calculation. In a separate article, we will be sharing with you the cost of the fixed capital (equipment) you might incur. Just a teaser, it can be as low as $15 but it all depends on how you want to brew it.

Instant coffees and coffees from outside usually add lots of creamers and sugar (especially your instant coffees) to enhance their taste. This is because the beans used are either lower quality, or it has been roasted and stored for a long time and it has lost most of its flavour. These sweeteners hence help to make the coffee taste nicer. As we have all heard, too much sugar is never good. You should try to cut down on it as much as possible if you are health conscious. Home brewed coffee, on the other hand, is healthier as you can avoid adding the creamers and sugar it will taste even better.

Better, Fresher Taste

Some of you may have experienced this. You try going the healthy route for a day. You go up to the coffee shop auntie or uncle and order Kopi O Kosong. You take a sip of it and it is very bitter. You never order it again. As explained above, this is due to the beans being roasted and stored for a long time, so it has lost its inherent flavour. Of course, we have visited and tried coffee shops that use fresh beans and the Kopi O Kosong taste delicious.
