Following the previous controversy surrounding Galaxy Fold, it was pulled back from the original launch date of 26 April. Previously, reviewers mistook the protective layer as a screen protector. When they tried to remove it, it causes irreversible damages to the phone causing Samsung to delay the delay. Now, Samsung just announced they have enhanced their product is ready to launch.

What has been fixed?

According to Samsung, these are the changes made:

• The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.

• Galaxy Fold features additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles while maintaining its signature foldable experience.

• The top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps. Additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display. The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.

• The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.

When is it coming out?

According to Samsung’s latest announcement, the Galaxy Fold will be launched this September, with no exact date given. It is rumoured to launch in the US and UK first, probably to trail whether the fix works or not.

How much will it cost?

The Galaxy Fold has a launch price of USD 1980 (~2750 SGD), or more commonly called as the $2000 phone. It is definitely targeted at very specific groups of people such as those who want to be one of the first to try folding phones.

Should you get it?

Let’s assume you have lots of money to spare and you are considering this phone between other flagship devices such as Google Pixel, S10 Series, iPhone XS. To be fair, it is not a fair comparison as these are different types of phones. Galaxy Fold is a new concept in the market while the current line-up of flagship smartphones are tried and tested. A better question to ask will be, do you want to spend $2000 to get a folding phone, be it the Galaxy Fold or Huawei Mate X.

In our opinion, no. Folding phones are still too new. When folded, the front screen of the Galaxy fold looks… odd. Apart from the looks, we believe smartphone manufacturers have not enhanced the technology to the point where average day to day user will be able to use it without hitch. There are still a lot of things to be work on.

Having said that, our analysis could be wrong. Until we manage to get our hands to try one of this, it is just pure speculation. We are always happy for Samsung and any other smartphone manufacturers to surprise us (in a good way) as it means it is a huge leap in the industry.
