Take a Break from Screen Time at Punggol Park

Did you know? Although the name implies that it is in Punggol, this park is located in Hougang! 🤠

A visit to Hougang can’t be completed without taking a stroll at Punggol Park while enjoying the view of the greenery and the 5-hectare oval lake. You can also spot wild animals like otters and monitor lizards while you’re there! So be sure to keep a look out!

Additionally, you can consider signing your little ones up for SkateXtreme at Punggol Park, which offers inline skating classes for kids. They provide packages of 8 lessons for $120.

Admire the Wall Murals on HDB Blocks in Hougang.

It’s not a common sight to see wall paintings on HDB blocks since it requires a permit for public painting in Singapore. 

So while you’re in the Hougang neighbourhood, be sure to visit the buildings with massive themed murals along Avenues 8 & 9. It features paintings of local icons like Merlion, Kampong and Changi airport’s control tower which adds a pop of colour compared to the usual HDB blocks!

For ecologists or nature lovers, the rooftop Bonsai Garden is a great place to visit, especially if you enjoy meticulously shaped trees. Hidden at the top of Block 933’s multi-storey car park, it offers plenty of benches for heart-to-heart talks while admiring the plants. You can also catch a glimpse of the painted HDB blocks, which adds the cherry on top!

Well-known for its generous servings and affordable prices, Sin Heng Kee Porridge in Hougang offers a hearty bowl of Cantonese-style congee.

With a variety of options including fish, pork, and abalone porridge, one of the must-tries is their Signature Congee ($6.50). Packed with ingredients like century egg and pork slices, it provides a great balance of carbs and protein, making it well worth the price.

Nestled among the blocks is a haven for children—a community water playground for everyone to enjoy! 

This newly built park comprises two main areas: a splash pad and a water play area. The splash pad, designed for children aged 6 to 12 years old, features a large spray fountain, spray jet tunnels, and ground-level water jets. Meanwhile, the water play area caters to younger children aged 2 to 5 years old, offering water streams and interactive play elements.

There are various heritage trails across Singapore launched by the National Heritage Board (NHB) to bring the nation’s rich heritage to Singaporeans’ doorstep. The trail in Hougang covers several spots, including two national monuments:

The oldest place of worship in Hougang was established by a Roman Catholic missionary organization. It serves as a historic site that bears witness to the early efforts of Catholic missionaries in the region, reflecting the rich religious heritage of Hougang. 

It serves as a testament to the community’s longstanding spiritual traditions and continues to be a place of significance for worshippers and visitors alike.

Hougang Tou Mu Kung

Gazetted as a national monument on 14 January 2005, it is the oldest temple dedicated to Taoist deities. Despite undergoing numerous changes, it remains one of the most popular temples devoted to the Nine Emperor Gods.

Located within a community centre lies the lively Ci Yuan Hawker Centre with 40 different stalls to choose from and encompasses just about every type of local cuisine you’d expect such as chicken rice, wanton mee, prawn mee, and other great dishes that are a must-try.
