Ever watched an Olympic badminton match?

The way professional players glide across the court, executing powerful jump smashes that echo through the arena—it’s a sight to behold.

On the surface, badminton seems easy. With its simple rules and low barriers to entry, many believe it’s a game anyone can excel in.

But despite being “easy to learn,” it’s incredibly hard to master. So, how does a complete “noob” go from zero to hero? 🦸

How To Scale Your Way Up To The Next Level

Footwork is the most important thing in badminton.

It’s the key to making the game look effortless and stylish like the professionals do.

Without good footwork, even the most powerful and skilful badminton strokes and smashes are useless.

A common mistake new players make is staying rooted in the same position where they hit the last shot.

Instead, they should return to their base position immediately after every shot, which is KEY. 🔑

By doing so, you’ll conserve energy and stay one step ahead of your opponent.

The base position varies for singles and doubles games, but it’s usually the centre of the area a player is covering.

How Similar Is Badminton And Fencing?

Badminton footwork is often similar to fencing, where players rely on a combination of quick, precise movements and balanced stances to maintain control and respond effectively to their opponent’s actions. 🤺

The lunging motion and the lateral movements are very similar in both sports, hence picturing yourself fencing when doing footwork could help instil the correct habits.

So, when trying to reach a shuttle near the front court, players will often take a few steps and then lunge to reach the shuttle.

A good way to practice and master this movement is by doing a 6 corner footwork drill.

This drill will instil in you the muscle memory required to move quickly on the badminton court.

Being Spoilt For Variety In Shots When It Comes To Playing Badminton

In a usual game of badminton, there are often many different shots at your disposal.

Shots can often be split into offensive or defensive.🛡️

And mastering most of them will be the key to upgrading your skills to the next level.

Defensive Badminton Shots To Get You Out Of Sticky Situations

For defensive shots, the most used ones are: Lift, Drive and Clear.

Lifting – pushes the opponent back to the rear court and helps to take the pressure off.

Drive – a basic flat shot, directly hit over the net. It is a powerful, quick counter-attacking shot that is easy to execute

Clear – Also Known As lobbing, is a high shot from your rear court to the opponent’s rear court, aiming to push them towards the back line

Offensive Badminton Shots To Win You The Rally

For offensive shots, there are also a few varieties to choose from like: Smash, Drop, Net or Net kill.⚔️

Net – is a shot played at your front court to the opponent’s front court, often to set up, your opponent to make a lift to you so you can attack.

Tap or Net kill – Using a quick swiping motion, the net kill aims to end the rally by hitting the shuttle into the ground, when an opponent’s net shot is too high.

Drop – Often played from the mid to rear court, it is a shot that invokes a sudden change in pace which, when played correctly catches the opponent off guard.

Smash – powerful shot aimed at the opponent’s midcourt or frontcourt, hit flat and fast, often to score points or set up scoring opportunities.💪

Despite only having 7 basic shots, there are still many shots and variations that can be used.🏸

Just varying the angle, and the speed and adding deception helps to create limitless possibilities on the different shots you can play.

However, with that being said, these 7 basic shots are still important fundamentals that should be trained before moving on to other variations.

Badminton Is Just A Chess Game…

Despite badminton being a physical sport, it is also a mind game.🧠

Your opponent is trying to anticipate your moves, trying to disrupt your rhythm, break your momentum and even exploit your bad habits.

You have to stay one step ahead, thinking not just about your current shot but also about the next few moves.

Much like chess, badminton is all about strategy, planning, and anticipating your opponent’s responses.

In badminton, deception plays a key role.

A well-disguised drop shot or a flick serve can catch your opponent off guard, forcing them to scramble and lose their rhythm. 🪘

Similarly, varying your pace, placement, and shot selection ensures that your opponent cannot easily predict your next move.

This keeps them guessing and puts you in control of the game.

The Most Important Part Of Getting Better… Fun

After reading through so much theory and how to get better, let’s not forget the most important thing in Badminton, which is that you must have fun.

Learning and improving is very important, but without having FUN, it would just be for nothing.

When you have fun and enjoy the game, oftentimes, you will naturally learn the game and how it should be played.
